ART IN ITALY SEMINARS START IN SEPTEMBER – DAAC

August 22, 2019 Carlos Arreola

Have you ever wanted to visit the best of Italy? Or have you traveled there and want to relive the visit? If so, you’re in luck because in September, the Doña Ana Arts Council’s popular Feed Your Mind art history and cultural seminars start anew with a program taught by Kathleen Key, who taught art history in Houston for many years, is now an instructor at UTEP, and who has traveled the world with an eye on art.

Key will present a twelve-week course titled “Art in Italy” beginning Monday, September 9 with classes running from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Attendees may choose to buy an entire seminar series or drop in for individual classes that interest them. Light refreshments will be served, including samples of
Italian food and wine. Classes will continue on Mondays through December 9, (no classes on October 28 and November 4). When we consider art in Italy, we usually think of famous painters such as Michelangelo, but the
art of Italy also includes the churches, museums, major sightseeing sites, piazzas, restaurants, the fashion designers and the food, from pasta to gelato.

Key says, “Instead of a straight art history lecture in Italian art, we will look at various cities and towns and see the fabulous art and architecture in each place. And include food and shopping and hotels for fun.”

Schedule of seminars:

 Seminars 1 – 4 (September 9, 16, 23 and 30): Rome, including towns and tourist sights close to Rome like Orvieto and the gardens of Tivoli and Villa d ’Este
 Seminars 5, 6 & 7 (October 7, 14 & 21): Florence, with every church and most museums in Florence, including San Miniato, Fiesole, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Perugia, San Gimignano, Cortona, Assisi

[Skip 2 weeks; no seminars on October 28 & Nov 4]

 Seminars 8 & 9 (November 11 & 18) Venice, including Verona, Padua, Ravenna and the incredible art in these towns
 Seminar 10 (November 25) Naples, Pompeii and Paestum, site of an exquisite temple from ancient times plus towns along the Amalfi coast
 Seminar 11 (December 2) Milan, including Turin, Genoa, the Cinque Terre and small towns in the north.
 Seminar 12 (December 9 – last seminar) Sicily! Including art in nearby towns.  Feed Your Mind seminars are $20 for a drop-in fee per class or $120 for the full twelve-week course. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount. All sessions are presented at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza in Mesilla.
