Two long-standing local none-profit organizations, Casa de Peregrinos (CdP) and Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC), that serve the community in very different ways, are coming together to “Feed the Body and Soul” on September 30, with a benefit concert featuring none other than Nosotros and two local mariachi groups, Mariachi Las Muñecas and Mariachi Espuelas de Cobre. The event will benefit DAAC’s children’s art programs and Casa de Peregrinos’ children’s food programs.
This is the second time the two non-profits have collaborated for this event, “Feed the Body and Soul.” The evening will include a concert by the popular group, Nosotros, and performances by the two youth mariachi groups sponsored by New Mexico Advocates for the Arts. Two local food trucks will be on hand plus beer from Spotted Dog and wine from Luna Rosa. The festivities take place at the Doña Ana Arts Council (patio area), 1740 Calle de Mercado in Mesilla, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will be a fun-filled evening for the entire family.
“We wanted to make this an outdoor event a la tradicion of tardeada,” said Lorenzo Alba, Executive Director of CdP. “We chose Nosotros because of their roots in Las Cruces and we wanted to make sure that people had the opportunity to not only listen, but do some dancing too,” added Alba.
Nosotros, a nine-piece group which combines Latin rhythms with elements of rock, salsa, jazz, and cumbia, began in Las Cruces, but is now based in northern New Mexico. They’ve been featured on NPR’s Alt Latino, have twice won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, and have received 12 New Mexico Music Awards. M. E. Schenck of Hyperactive Music Magazine says of them, “Nosotros’ music is not to be explained, it is to be felt in the pit of our souls.” The group, which has released seven studio albums, is comprised of Glenn Contreras (lead vocals), Carlos Fontana (lead vocals), Shane Derk (guitar), Randy Sanchez (tres, guitar), Manuel Ramirez (saxophone), Gilbert Uribe (bass), Ricky Carrido (congas), Jesse Joaquin Parker (vibes, percussion), and Dennis Javier Jasso (drums).
DAAC Executive Director, Kathleen Albers, said, “Food for the body and food for the soul; both are essential for the children of Doña Ana County to thrive. That is why the Doña Ana Arts Council and Casa de Peregrinos are collaborating on this event to help raise money for our children’s programs. ”
Offering children opportunities to participate in the arts is at the heart of the DAAC mission. Initiatives include school programs, including teacher professional development, summer camp programs in visual arts and performing arts, and workshops to serve the young residents of La Casa Shelter for Domestic Violence.
“We’re super excited about this event, for us at CdP it will benefit our children’s programs that are included in almost everything we do. They and seniors are the most important people we serve. 40 percent of the people we serve are in fact children,” said Alba.
Casa de Peregrinos is Las Cruces and Doña Ana County’s largest food pantry, serving nearly 24,000 people a year. Their flagship pantry is located at the Community of Hope Campus; however, they also host 21 mobile food pantries (MFPs). They have 13 strategically placed MFPs in rural communities in proximity to all the colonias in the county, 5 MFPs at the senior center in Las Cruces and 3 student MFPs at the two Doña Ana Community College Campuses in Las Cruces and at New Mexico State University. Last year they distributed more than 3.2 million pounds of food at these locations.
The benefit concert is $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available online at www.cdpevents.org or at the DAAC offices, 1740 Calle de Mercado, Suite B. More information and advance tickets available at 575-523-6403.
