Discovering Leasburg Dam State Park

Sat. December 15, 2018

10am – Noon

 Come out and join a ranger led hike at Leasburg Dam State Park and learn about the unique geology, hydrology, geothermal and plant and animal activity along this stretch of the Rio Grande. Hike is easy to moderate, approximately 2.5 mile round trip with an elevation gain/drop of about 200ft from campground down to riverbed. Find out about what the Rio Grande and the Mesilla Valley have in common with only 4 other river valleys in the world. Learn about ranger led efforts to restore native flora and fauna.

 Meet Ranger at Park Visitor Center. Day Use Fee of $5 per vehicle does apply.

December Night Sky

5pm – 7pm

Come out and see through various telescopes – including a research grade 16 inch telescope in the Leasburg Dam State Park Observatory. Volunteers from the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces will be on hand to assist and inform you about celestial objects in our quality night sky. Dress warmly and feel free to bring your own telescope as well.

 Day Use Fee of $5 per vehicle does apply.

Join us for a ranger led hike of the beautiful Buffalo Soldier, Upper and Lower Mogollon Trails and experience both the classic Chihuahuan Desert uplands and the riverine, riparian environments along the Rio Grande. See and feel the rare and unique geothermal springs and the aquatic plants and animals that are sustained by these waters – in the dead of winter!

Experience an environment most similar to what the Spanish explorers of over 300 years ago witnessed!See and feel the rare and unique geothermal springs and the aquatic plants and animals that are sustained by these waters – in the dead of winter!

Discover Black History in the Southwest at Leasburg Dam State Park

Experience a landscape most similar to what the Spanish explorers of over 300 years ago witnessed! Learn about some of the more famous and lesser known African – American history of the area. See and feel the rare and unique geothermal springs and the aquatic plants and animals that are sustained by these waters – in the dead of winter!
