The Town of Mesilla will host its annual Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15. The holiday commemorates Mexican Independence Day.
Mesilla’s annual celebration kicks off with a parade on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. along Avenida de Mesilla. The parade route begins at the corner of Avenida de Mesilla and Calle de Mercado and the route ends at Four Points Gin. This year’s theme is The Town of Mesilla.. The parade will feature floats, equestrian units, marching bands, color guards, spirit squads, antique vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks and other groups. Entries still taken through Wednesday, September 11th.
Opening ceremonies for the fiesta are at noon Saturday, Sept. 14 at the plaza. Mayor Nora Barraza will begin with a welcome message. The traditional El Grito will be performed by Deputy Consul of Community Affairs General of Mexico, Adriana Martinez. Joel Martinez will serve as the master of ceremonies. The fiesta is from noon-to-10 p.m. Saturday and from noon-to-7 p.m. Sunday. Saturday evening will conclude with the highly recognizable Latin band Nosotros sponsored by La Posta from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday will conclude with the band Tudy and the Silver Bullet Band from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Diez y Seis de Septiembre, the 16th of September, marks the launch of Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain. On Sept. 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo de Costilla led the first large revolutionary forces against the Spaniards. The holiday is similar to July 4 in the United States.
About 30 vendor booths will line the plaza offering a variety of products including art, crafts, games, drinks and food. There will also be jumping balloons, a greased pole climb, sponsored by Andele Restaurant and piñatas for kids.
