Doña Ana Arts Council April 2019 Calendar of Events

The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) April calendar includes a presentation on the history of Otero Mesa, 2-hour hands-on art classes, two-day art workshops, and much more. All activities take place at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza next to Paisano Cafe. April 8 and 15, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: “Fight at Otero Mesa” Feed Your Mind presentation on the colorful history and uncertain future of the Otero Mesa by local speaker Bill Key. The two-part series is $20.

April 10, 2 – 4 p.m. or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! pour painting class with Barbara Armstrong. This class is part of the Las Cruces Space Festival activities.  Attendees will use two images of space from the Hubble space telescope for inspiration. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

April 13, 4 – 7 p.m.: Gallery reception for artists Gary Ozias and Karen Currier during Second Saturday 10–10 Arts Hop. Ozias creates landscapes in oil and pastels that depict America, the southwest and New Mexico.  Currier is a gourd artist with many whimsical and southwest-themed creations made of gourds. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments served and piano entertainment by Bill Killban.

April 16 – 17, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.: SOLD OUT – Artists’ Workshop on “The Art of Simplification: Water-based Mixed Media” with Nancy Begin and Susan Hassen. The cost of the class is $200, but is discounted 20 percent for members of DAAC. Materials list provided upon registration.

April 24, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! paper making class with Martha Duran. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty percent discount. Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

April 26, noon: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley brown bag meeting, no charge and open to all.  This will be the third of a four-part discussion on creating a Las Cruces/Dona Ana County arts directory.

April 29, 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: Feed Your Mind series begins on the topic of Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key. The series continues Mondays through June 24.   Participants may attend either session, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m. Individual sessions are $20 each and the discounted price for the full series is $90.

May 2, 1:30 – 3 p.m.: Feed Your Mind presentation first meeting on the History of Fashion and Fashion Design with Kathleen Key. This nine-part series will delve into fashion and fashion design over the centuries. Individual sessions may be attended for $20 each or register for all nine sessions for $90.
