The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) May calendar includes the start of two art history seminar series, the continuation of Get ArtRageous! 2-hour hands-on art classes, a multiple-day art workshop, a Santa Fe Opera event and much more. Unless otherwise indicated, activities take place at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza next to Paisano Cafe. May 1, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! Gourd Jewelry Making with Sylvia Hendrickson. These “make and take” art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

May 2, 1:30 – 3 p.m.: Feed Your Mind first seminar on the History of Fashion and Fashion Design with Kathleen Key. This nine-part series (Thursdays from May 2 – June 27) will delve into fashion and fashion design over the centuries. Individual sessions may be attended for $20 each or register for all nine sessions for $90.

May 6, 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: 2nd part of 9 in the Feed Your Mind seminar series on the topic of Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key. The series continues Mondays through June 24.   Participants may attend either session, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m. Individual sessions are $20 each and the discounted price for the full series is $90.

May 7 – 8, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and May 9, 9 a.m. to noon:  Artists’ Workshop on “Watercolor on Yupo Paper” with Jody O’Meara of Denver. The cost of the two-and-1/2 day workshop is $250, but is discounted 20 percent for members of DAAC. Materials list provided upon registration.

May 9, 1:30 – 3 p.m.: Feed Your Mind presentation 2nd meeting on the History of Fashion and Fashion Design with Kathleen Key. This nine-part series (Thursdays through June 27) will delve into fashion and fashion design over the centuries. Individual sessions may be attended for $20 each or register for all nine sessions for $90.

May 10, 7 – 8 p.m. Santa Fe Opera presents “Unshakeable” as part of their spring educational and community outreach tour at Oñate High School Performing Arts Center, 5700 Mesa Grande Dr., Las Cruces.   Free and open to the public.

May 11, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.:  Introduction for new exercise class at the DAAC Art & Cultural Center called “Classical Stretch” using the ESSENTRICSTM program with Carol Witham.  Carol is a Level IV ESSENTRICS TM certified instructor, medical exercise specialist and personal trainer.  The introductory 3-hour workshop will be Saturday, May 11th; regular classes will be on Tuesdays from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. starting May 21st.  Class size limited to 15 people. An Introductory Special price of $40 is for the May 11 three-hour workshop and six one-hour classes from May 21 to June 25.  Bring a floor mat and water, and wear comfortable clothes.

May 11, 4 – 7 p.m.: Gallery reception for the New Mexico Watercolor Society Southern Chapter during Second Saturday 10–10 Arts Hop.  Thirty pieces of juried art work by members of the group will be on display during the month of May. The artists’ reception is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served with piano entertainment by Bill Kolbin.

May 13, 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: 3rd part of 9 in the Feed Your Mind series on the topic of Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key. The series continues Mondays through June 24.   Participants may attend either session, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m. Individual sessions are $20 each and the discounted price for the full series is $90.

May 14, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.: The 32nd Annual Community Arts Awards presentation.  Celebrate with the recipients of six art awards categories at the Doña Ana Arts Council’s Arts & Cultural Center.  No tickets required, but seating is limited and an RSVP is required to reserve a seat. RSVP to admin@daarts.org

May 15, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! Drawing Basics with Sally Quillin.  Learn the basics of drawing with pencil or charcoal in this fun, supportive environment.  The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

May 16, 1:30 – 3 p.m.: Feed Your Mind presentation 3rd meeting on the History of Fashion and Fashion Design with Kathleen Key. May 18, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. “The Divas!  A Fundraiser for Children’s Opera Camp”.  Spend a delightful evening with Christa Frederickson and friends singing Broadway show tunes and familiar opera arias to help raise scholarship dollars for the Opera Storytellers Camp that will take place from June 3 – 14.  Christa Frederickson is a choir teacher with LCPS, an adjunct professor in the Theatre Department at NMSU, and director of the Opera Storytellers Camp. $20 in advance or $25 at the door; seating is limited to 30 people. Light refreshments and dessert will be served.

May 20, 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: 4th part of 9 in the Feed Your Mind series on the topic of Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key. May 31, noon to 1:30 p.m.: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley brown bag meeting, no charge and open to all.  This will be the fourth of a four-part discussion on creating a Las Cruces/Dona Ana County arts directory.
