February is For the Love of Art month in the Mesilla Valley and the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) will share the love with classes, seminars and music events throughout the month. January 28, February 4, 18 & 25, March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31: Essentrics: Body Toning and Strength Building, a 12-week session with Carol Witham. Essentrics is a dynamic weight-free strengthening program based on elements of Pilates, Ballet, Yoga and T’ai Chi. The name Essentrics stems from the concept of eccentric muscle work, which implies that there is a load on the muscle while it is being lengthened. Essentrics was originally developed by Miranda Esmonde-White who stars in the “Classical Stretch” program on PBS. Local expert Carol Witham trained with Esmonde-White and is one of only 5 specialists in the country. According to Carol, “Each class is filled with movement, energy and strength building exercises.” Bring a yoga mat and water. The twelve-week session cost is $120. Pre-registration required. February 5, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! Watercolor Valentines with Jan Hampton.
Review or learn several watercolor techniques within simple heart designs and take home two or more beautiful Valentine cards. Cards will be made on Arches 140lb. watercolor paper using professional watercolor paint. Techniques: wet-in-wet, scratching within a wet wash; ‘painting behind’; adding salt, water-soluble crayons, collage papers, and plastic wrap. These two-hour art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount. Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.
February 8, 4 – 7 p.m.: Second Saturday 10-10 Arts Hop Opening Reception for the ArtForms gallery exhibit. Ten to twelve artists who are members of ArtForms and who represent a variety of different visual art forms will display their work and be available at the reception. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be available for viewing during the month of February during DAAC regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
February 8, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.: Classical Drinking. This popular live music series produced and hosted by NMSU Music professor Jim Shearer, returns for three months in the spring of 2020: February, March and April. Classical Drinking features regional professional musicians in a relaxed atmosphere at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center. Dry Point Distillers also returns with a cash bar offering cocktails and non-alcoholic options. The February 8th event features Erik Unsworth of University of Texas at El Paso on double bass. February 11 – 13, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Three-day Artists’ Workshop with Nancy Begin and Susan Hanssen. “The Art of Simplification Part 2: Eliminating the Unnecessary so the Necessary May Speak” Suitable for intermediate and advanced painters in water-based media. This is a six-week art history and cultural series offered at two different days and times. The series is presented by popular art historian, teacher and world traveler Kathleen Key. Cost is $60 for 6 weeks or $20 per individual seminar.

February 18 & 25, March 3, 10, 17 & 24: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Feed Your Mind: Impressionism with Kathleen Key. A six-week art history and cultural series on Tuesday afternoons starting February 18. Come study the history of the artists and the movement we call “French Impressionism” –for many, their favorite period in European art! We will begin with the Barbizon artists, Eugene Boudin, Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas moving to Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frederic Bazille, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pisarro, Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt and others. The time period for this class is 1860 – 1926, the year of Claude Monet’s death. We will study the work of these artists plus the towns and regions of France they were working in such as Giverny, the Normandy coast and the south of France. February 19, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! Getting Your Work Seen Online: A Template Website Approach with Mary Diesel. Local artist Mary Diesel has been using FASO (Fine Art Studio Online) as her website program since 2009, and believes the template approach is the way to go for artists who want to spend most of their time making their art! The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount. Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.
February 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: One-day Artist Workshop: Fundamentals of Watercolor, Part 2, with Sally Quillin. This class is a continuation of Fundamentals of Watercolor Part 1, but it is NOT a pre-requisite to have attended Part 1 in order sign up for Part 2. This class is appropriate for beginning artists, or for those who wish to refresh their skills in watercolor painting. All materials and light refreshments provided. Cost is $65 for the one-day workshop; DAAC members receive a 20% discount.

February 28, Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley, monthly educational and networking meeting for all who are interested in the arts. Promoting Art is usually held on the fourth Friday of the month at noon. For February, members of ArtForms will discuss the techniques they use to make their art work. Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
