The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) July calendar includes a summer theatre camp performance, the continuation of two art history seminars, and four Get ArtRageous! “make & take” art classes. The summer art camp takes place at Las Cruces High School, 1755 El Paseo Rd.  All other activities take place at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza next to Paisano Cafe. For more information or registration, call (575) 523-6403 or go to www.daarts.org.

July 1 and July 8, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: Parts 8 and 9 of the nine-part Feed Your Mind seminar series on the topic of Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key.  Participants may attend either session, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.  Individual sessions are $20 each. Light refreshments are served.

July 10, 2- 4 p.m. or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! with Roy Van Der Aa – An Introduction to Pochoir Printing.  Pochoir is a French technique of artist’s printmaking using stencils to create an image and pull an edition. It was popular between 1870 and 1930 when it was replaced by lithography. It was used by Matisse, Picasso, Sonia Delaunay and Kees van Dongen. Pochoir was used to “fill in” colors of early lithos and other linear printing methods. In Roy’s work, it was a natural outgrowth of Painting with stencils as he could use Pochoir to create multiples without a press with acrylic paints. Though the demonstration will be non-objective in nature, Poichoir can easily be adapted to realism and abstraction.

Roy van der Aa has been a professional artist since 1978 participating in over 110 exhibits in 4 countries.  These “make and take” art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

July 11 and July 18, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.  Feed Your Mind with Kathleen Key. Parts 8 and 9 of the 9-week History of Fashion and Fashion Design.  Individual classes are $20 each.

July 13, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: Missoula Children’s Theatre summer camp final performance at Las Cruces High School, 1755 El Paseo Rd., theatre building, north side of campus.  This is the culmination of a week-long theatre experience for children in grades 1 – 12. Cost is $7 Adults and $3 Children ages 3 – 12; tickets available at the door.

July 13, 4 – 7 p.m.: July gallery exhibit reception for ‘Plein Air Paintings by Five Friends:  Desert Mountains and Abundant Valleys’.  This group of adventurous outdoor painters (en plein air) includes Michelle Augustyniak, Linda Hagen, Judy Licht, Arlene J. Tugel and Rhoda Winters. The reception is free and open to the public.  Bill Kolbin will provide entertainment on the piano from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

July 17, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! with Carrie Greer – Introduction to Encaustic Painting.  The process called “Encaustic” involves painting with hot wax & resin with colored pigments.   Encaustic lends itself very well to mixed media, so attendees are encouraged to bring paper images or words to imbed within the wax.   The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount. Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

July 24, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! with Vickie Morrow – Rust Dyeing.
Learn how to transfer rusty old objects onto fabric like clothing, prayer flags, quilting, fiber art, in your artwork, scarves, purses….just to name a few.  Three pieces of fabric will be provided, however attendees are encouraged to bring more of their own white fabric or white items to dye.  If you have a cafeteria type tray, bring that too.  You will take home your own collection of rusty fabric and tons of ideas! The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

July 26, noon to 1:30 p.m.: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley brown bag educational/networking meeting for all who are interested in the arts.  Free and open to the public. Topic for the July meeting will be “Art Therapy” presented by local artist and teacher, Jan Hampton.

July 31, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.: Get ArtRageous! with Lisa Carlson – Introductory Beading:  Make an Anklet Bracelet and a Pair of Earrings.
