Doña Ana Arts Council September 2019 Calendar of Events

September 2019 is a big month for the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC).  The September calendar includes four Get ArtRageous! art classes, a new art exhibit, a new art history series, four artist workshops, and for the first time, a new music series called “Classical Drinking”.   All activities take place at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in Mesilla. September 3, 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. EssentricsBody Toning and Exercise class with Carol Witham.  Carol is a Level IV Essentrics certified instructor, medical exercise specialist and personal trainer.  This 12- week course will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. starting September 3 and ending December 3 (except NO classes on October 1 and November 5).  Class size is limited to 15 people. The price is $120 for 12 weeks of instruction. Pre-registration is required. Bring a floor mat and water, and wear comfortable clothes.  

September 4, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! with Desiree Terrazas and Barb Bowman of Barb’s Flowerland – Tropical Flower Arranging.  Learn techniques to make and take home a beautiful live flower arrangement.  These two-hour art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

September 6 – 7, Two-day Artist Workshop:  Shibori Japanese Fabric Dyeing with Linda Elkins.  Students will explore five types of shibori with indigo dye:  Pleating, folding, stitching, clamping and pole wrapping.  Schedule: Friday from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  The cost is $100 for the workshop and includes all materials and light refreshments.  

September 9, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.  Feed Your Mind: The Art of Italy, 12-week art history and cultural series with Kathleen Key.  Explore the churches, museums, piazzas, and fashion of Italy with the popular art historian and world traveler, Kathleen Key.  The first seminar will be September 9 and will continue Monday evenings through December 9 (except NO classes on October 28 and November 4).  Cost is $120 for 12 weeks or $20 per individual seminar.  

September 11, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! Mixed Media Abstract Acrylics with Jackie Mitchell Edwards.   These art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

September 14, 4 – 7 p.m.:  Second Saturday 10-10 Arts Hop Opening reception for Marie Siegrist’s watercolor exhibit.  The reception is free and open to the public.  The exhibit also will be available for viewing from September 3 – September 27 during DAAC regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

September 14, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.: Classical Drinking.   This is the first of a new live music series that will feature regional musicians in a relaxed atmosphere.   Dry Point Distillers will offer a cash bar with cocktails and non-alcoholic options. The first Classical Drinking event will feature La Catrina String Quartet with special guest Jim Shearer.  Cost: $15 at the door or in advance.

September 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  One-day Artist Workshop: Watercolor & Watercolor Pencil Workshop with Marie Siegrist.  Students will explore traditional watercolor techniques in combination with the use of watercolor pencils.  Cost is $65 for the workshop; DAAC members receive a 20% discount. Supply list for the class will be sent to students upon registration.  

September 18, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.:  Get ArtRageous! Two-hour sip, make & take art class:  Soul Collage Cards with Jan Hampton. Jan specializes in using art as therapy.  These art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

September 20 – 22:  Three-day Artist Workshop:  Pet Portraits with Andy Mallen.  Learn the special techniques from the award-winning pet portrait artist Andy Mallen of Denver, Colorado.  Schedule: Friday, 9/20 from 1 – 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9/21 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 9/22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A supply list will be furnished upon registration.  Cost is $250 for the three-day workshop; DAAC members receive a 20% discount.

September 25, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.:  Get ArtRageous! Two-hour “sip, make & take” art class:  Mimbres-style Clay Bowls with Lisa Carlson. Create a one-of-a-kind clay bowl fashioned in the Native American Mimbres style.  These art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. DAAC members receive a twenty per cent discount.  Dress appropriately to have fun with potentially messy art materials.

September 27 – 28:  Two-day Artist Workshop:  Sculpting Fiber Clay with Joanie Wolter.  Create whimsical animals and other unique sculptures with fiber clay expert Joanie Wolter.  The two-day workshop runs Friday, September 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.    All materials included; light refreshments served. Cost is $190 for the two-day event. DAAC members receive a 20% discount.

September 27, 5 – 7 p.m.: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley educational/networking meeting for all who are interested in the arts.  These networking meeting are usually held from noon- 1 p.m., but this month, we are moving the time to 5 – 7 p.m. The topic for September will be The Music Scene in Las Cruces, presented by local musician and professor of music at New Mexico State University, Dr. Jim Shearer.  Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
