Easy Getaway Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm

GetawayAlbuquerque. We all travel to or through this bustling city be it for vacation or work, with the family or solo. Next time you do, why not try something new for your lodging?

Situated in the northwest area of town, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm is anything but ordinary. Tranquility descends from the moment you turn down the tree-lined path. The grounds are steeped in a rich history, dating back to 1932 when Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms, wife of Congressman Albert Simms, commissioned the renovation of the original ranch house and the creation of the La Quinta Cultural Center. Notable architect John Gaw Meem—along with numerous other re-nowned craftspersons—created a beauty that has only flourished over time. In fact, the internationally recognized design draws in architects from all over the world hoping to study the buildings firsthand.

I recently had the pleasure to stay at Los Poblanos and found myself taken in by the history, the beauty, and the privacy—so much so that I had to let our Neighbors readers know about it. Peacocks wander the grounds showcasing their regal beauty to visitors popping in to the charming Farm Shop to purchase everything from on-site homemade spices and slow-cooked caramels (a must buy!) to area history books and their signature organic lavender body products.

Dinner at the Historic Inn is casual, with a nod to the best in fine-dining. The artisanal dishes are crafted from ingredients sourced right on the property. (Breakfast is equally impressive and is topped off with the best hand-squeezed orange juice I’ve ever had—ever.) They also mix specialty drinks. I recommend enjoying one before or after your meal in the Sala Grande, a homey space offering regional literature and a fireplace to sit next to and warm up.

While the food alone is worth the trip (dining experiences are open to the public, reservations required), I’d highly recommend booking a room for the night. Sumptuous bedding and robes, lavender bath products, uniquely New Mexican decor and crafts-manship, along with a wood-burning fireplace—the accommodations are extra cozy to say the least.

The Inn is currently undergoing a major addition, although one would never guess it in the peaceful surroundings. The newly built “Field” guest rooms and suites are styled with clean, simple design and will double overall accommodation capacity. Completion of the new construction and renovations will allow for an early summer opening.

In this vein of this edition of Neighbors magazine, which encourages you to try something new, swap out an average stay at a chain hotel, for an authentic New Mexican experience. I was told by many folks living in the area, “if you want to pamper yourself, Los Poblanos is the way to go.”

I think they undersold the experience.
