9Round is the newest fitness trend to hit the Mesilla Valley.
No more excuses Las Cruces; it’s time to get punching!
If you’re low on time, but are looking for a workout that mixes cardio, strength training, and kickboxing in a circuit with a watchful trainer, 9Round has a 30-minute workout that gives everyone a taste of feeling like a boxer while getting a high intensity workout.
The concept was founded in 2008 by husband and wife Shannon and Heather Hudson, in Greenville, South Carolina. Shannon wanted to take his favorite elements from kickboxing—the punching and kicking of bags—and remove what he didn’t like—the punching and kicking of people. There are now over 700 locations in 13 countries across the globe and 9Round embraces success by focusing on slipping easily into the lives of its members with a 30-minute circuit that fits with their schedule. There are no class times and a trainer guides each workout, making fitness fun, affordable, and accessible.
Each location is independently owned, and here in Las Cruces, the opportunity was picked up by Mark Rojas. Mark started his own fitness journey in 2002 and knew that he could impart some of his hard won knowledge to 9Round members.
“If you show up, there are results,” he says. “9Round is for all levels, so there’s no need to be intimidated to come in for your first free session to try it out.”
The concept is a straightforward interval circuit. There are nine stations with the first two focusing on strength and stamina with dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, and jump ropes. Stations three through eight are the core of the kickboxing program with punching and kicking heavy bags to build power, double end bags to increase coordination and timing, and speed bags to develop shoulder conditioning and speed. The last station works on the core, which when strengthened, improves the ability to perform almost any movement.
Trainers go to each station at the beginning of the three minutes to model the exercise for that day for your particular fitness level. Memberships to the 9Round gym come with gloves and hand wraps to safeguard your fingers and joints, and trainers teach members how to wrap their hands. Plus, every day is a new journey to enjoy as workouts change daily for all stations.
The 30 minutes are infused with constant movement. Between the three minutes, instead of a rest, there’s a trainer-led 30 second exercise that everyone in the gym completes together like modified burpees, crunches, or varied versions of planks.
Krystal Alvidrez, one of the 9Round trainers, started out as a member. “I didn’t know how much trainers did until I became one,” she laughs. But, she also remembers how her interactions with her own trainers spurred her on. “I want to make it as personal as possible, and modify it so they don’t hurt themselves, but get stronger,” she adds. “We can really tweak any exercise.”
Trainer Alissa Rojas is a student at New Mexico State University and is able to put her kinesiology training to work assisting 9Round members in finding the right way to move without pain.
All memberships come with unlimited workouts, but it’s one 30-minute circuit per visit. Members can show up whenever they want, and a new round starts every three minutes. The recommendation is to workout at least three times per week to start seeing results.
Members also have access to an online nutritional plan that aids the caloric burn. For an additional fee, they can purchase heart rate monitors that track their status on a screen at the gym so that they can stay in can stay in the target fat-burning zone.
This exciting new way to get your heart pumping makes getting in shape fun, and it only takes 30 minutes, so no more excuses! There’s never been a better time to get fit.
