Pet adoption | pets to adopt

Pet adoption | Aria white dogAria is a medium, white mix, approximately 40 pounds and 1.5 years old. She was found nearly starved to death and appeared to have been fighting to survive alone for a good, long while. Action Program for Animals (APA) has had her many months now and she’s ready for a loving family. Aria hasn’t found a home yet because she’s best as an only dog. She’s very sweet with people and kids, but is not too happy around other dogs.

Pet adoption | mercy grey and white catMercy is a domestic, shorthair, grey and white female. She is a cute and petite cat (approximately eight pounds) and is 1.5 years old. APA has had her since September 2017. She was rescued from a hoarding case and has been living communally with other cats in the APA cat room at their adoption center.

Pet adoption | andy dogThis guy is a celebrity! Andy is a 1.5-year-old male Terrier mix, approximately 30 pounds, who has the distinction of playing Sandy in the Las Cruces Community Theatre’s production of Annie in December 2017. He’s crate- and house-trained, friendly with people (including children of all ages) and dogs alike. Happy-go-lucky kind of guy!

Pet adoption | finn dogFinn is a male Basenji/Chihuahua mix with a short coat, an amazing smile, and personality plus. He’s 3 years old and good on a leash. He loves walks and massages. A home with a nice yard and no children would be best. Finn is crate and house trained.

Andy and Finn are available for adoption at:

Pet adoption | wilbur brown and white dogWilbur is a 4- to 5-year-old Hound mix. He came to Tails from the Shelter, the rescue division of Uncaged Paws, Inc., from a high-kill shelter in Roswell. It was apparent Wilbur spent a long time on his own before being picked up as a stray. He arrived in Las Cruces severely malnourished, underweight, and with several new and healing injuries. Wilbur took to all of his foster siblings, especially his three-year-old foster human sister. Because he was so malnourished, he developed pancreatitis. With an improved diet and more nurturing, Wilbur continues to grow and flourish. He would do best in a house with other dogs and with humans who are home most of the time. He is house broken, leash trained, and has learned several commands.

Wilbur is available for adoption at:
Tails from the Shelter

Coffee Joe

Pet adoption | coffee joe brown horseCoffee Joe is a youthful, 15-year-old, Thoroughbred gelding who has been searching for the right owner for four years. He’s well trained in dressage and has been shown in both hunter and jumper classes, and has gone cross country. He’s sound and healthy. With hard work, he may need a yearly injection in his coffin joints, but he’s sound enough to compete as is. Joe needs an intermediate rider to take advantage of his extensive resume, but he’s level-headed and calm, and can be used as a trail horse, too. Number one priority is to get him a loving home with an experienced equestrian owner. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the right horse lover. Joe’s adoption fee is $250.00.

Joe is available for adoption at:
Red Sky Farm

Pet adoption | luna cute dogLuna is a 3-year-old, Shar-Pei mix who came to the shelter in August of 2016. This sweet, shy girl gets along well with other dogs and gets very attached to the humans around her. She has off-and-on skin irritation issues with some mild hair loss, even though she’s been treated with Ivermectin. She also has the bad luck of having Erlichia, which is easily and inexpensively treated with an antibiotic. This pretty lady really needs to find a home outside the Shelter to resolve her health issues once and for all; she deserves it.

Pet adoption | rango the dogRango’s adoption fee has been waived so he can finally get a good home!
This mellow, brindle Lab mix came into ASCMV as a stray in August of 2016 and has been in the Adoptable Dog Ward for over a year. He is neutered, gets along great with other dogs and humans alike, and has a gentle, loving personality. Unfortunately, Rango is positive for Erlichia and will need inexpensive antibiotic treatment from his new, forever family. Are you the one to give this big bundle of love the home he deserves?

Luna and Rango are available for adoption at:
Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley | 3551 Bataan Memorial West | 575-382-0018 | ascmv.org
Monday through Friday, 8am-6pm with adoptions starting at noon; Saturday and Sunday from noon-5pm

What is Erlichia?

Ehrlichia is a type of bacteria that infects dogs and other species worldwide, causing a disease called Ehrlichiosis. Ehrlichia bacteria infect white blood cells and are commonly transmitted by ticks. The symptoms and severity of illness depend on the species of Ehrlichia involved and the immune response of the dog. The acute phase occurs within the first few weeks of being infected and is rarely fatal. Recovery can occur, or the dog can enter a “subclinical phase,” which can last for years, where there are no symptoms.

Ehrlichiosis responds well to treatment with the antibiotic Doxycycline. Improvement in symptoms is usually very quick, but several weeks of treatment is usually needed to ensure a full recovery. Reinfection is possible, as immunity to Ehrlichia bacteria is not long lasting.

Erlichia is not a death sentence and the dogs that contract it—through no fault of their own—deserve a chance to get treatment and live a normal life.
