Gallery Reception at the Arts and Cultural Center

January 10, 2018 Julian Nunez

January 13 brings a new opportunity to visit multiple art galleries and enjoy delicious food. The Mesilla Art Mercado (“art market”) includes art galleries/studios in the area off Avenida de Mesilla directly east of St. Claire Bistro at Calle de Mercado and Avenida de Mercado: the Doña Ana Arts Council’s (DAAC) Arts & Cultural Center, Rokoko Art Gallery, and Carolyn Bunch Studio, and the nearby restaurants where visitors can enjoy delicious meals: The Hacienda, Paisano Café, Salud! De Mesilla and St. Clair Bistro.

The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) Arts & Cultural Center’s gallery opening reception for the visual artist will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 5 – 7 p.m. Attendees can meet the artist and discuss her work while enjoying refreshments. The gallery is located at the new DAAC Arts & Cultural Center at 1740 Avenida de Mercado, suite D, in the Bulletin Plaza.

Laurel Weathersbee graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in art from Park College in Missouri and has taken numerous workshops and seminars in art from regionally, nationally, and internationally-recognized instructors in the intervening years. She has taught workshops for adults and children and is a signature member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society.

She has exhibited in solo and juried group exhibits in Las Cruces and Albuquerque and had a solo exhibit at Park University in Kansas City. Her current focus is cut and torn paper watercolor collages of the Southwestern landscapes and cut paper watercolor collages inspired by antique wallpaper, along with creating hand-made paper and books.

Weathersbee says, “For me, the Southwest desert is the most inspiring place. Here is an endless variety of geological formations, spicy, fragrant plant life, fascinating wildlife and, most of all, awesome skyscapes that go on forever and ever. Considering my fascination with the place, my creative abilities and training, painting makes perfect sense for me. I want to use whatever tools and talents I may have to share my joy in the desert with others.
