Each month, the Doña Ana Arts Council features a regional artist in the Arts & Cultural Center gallery and holds an opening reception in conjunction with the Second Saturday 10–10 Arts Hop, an opportunity to visit six galleries in Las Cruces and Mesilla over a 12- hour period. In March, the artist is Jan Minow, who began her life in El Paso when her father was stationed at Fort Bliss, has traveled and lived widely, and is now enjoying an
early retirement with her husband while focusing on her art and jewelry.
Minow earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Boulder in Colorado and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Arts Administration from SUNY in New York. She has exhibited her art in New York, Colorado, California, and Las Cruces. She says, “My creative productivity has always come in bursts when time and space have allowed me to concentrate on art. Although in the past I most often worked in a non-objective style — pictures that are not of a particular object or scene — I have been inspired in recent years to incorporate more abstract and graphic representations of
figures, landscapes, and nature.”
In addition to paintings, she also enjoys working in paper, clay, and mosaic, as well as creating jewelry under the business name jem jewelry. She especially enjoyed creating an indoor 360-degree landscape mural for Bear River Retreat in Nevada County, Calif. She also expresses her creativity through cooking, having owned a successful restaurant in Grass Valley, California, before moving to Las Cruces in 2013. Minow says about her artistic focus, “My paintings explore the interrelationship of color, line, shape, composition, the nature of the paint medium and how the dynamics
of these elements come together to form a successful work of art. Some works are completely non-objective and in others, I bring in abstract images while still concentrating on color and composition.”
Her show, “Flowers & Figures — Decidedly Feminine” new work by Jan Minow,” will be on exhibit at the Arts & Cultural Center throughout the month of March during regular business hours. The opening will be held March 9 from 4 – 7 p.m. during the Second Saturday 10–10 Arts Hop. A total of six galleries participate in the Arts Hop and stagger their hours so that there is always someplace to visit between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. that day.
