Raising Readers: Children’s Reading Alliance

localbusiness2It only takes 20 minutes a day to help a child start school with the potential for success. The Children’s Reading Alliance, created to promote community wide literacy by encouraging families to read together every day, also knows not every family has the books or the ability to read to their children.

The Children’s Reading Alliance offers First Teacher parent classes in English and Spanish. Through Books for You they provide children with books, while Books for Babies offers new mothers tools to start early. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library mails books to children from birth through age five. “When families read, talk, and play with their children every day, their children learn what they need to know for success in school and in life,” says Rorie Measure, president of the alliance.

Get Involved: To volunteer with or donate to the Children’s Reading Alliance, visit
childrensreadingalliance.org or email Rorie at rmeasure@gmail.com. Cash donations can be sent to Children’s Reading Alliance, P.O. Box 285, Mesilla, NM 88046 or made online at childrensreadingalliance.org.

Caring for Cats:
Broken Promises SW

The hearts of the volunteers that run Broken Promises SW (BPSW) are bursting with love and compassion for the unowned cats of Las Cruces. “We are caregivers, behaviorists, drivers, dishwashers, maids, mediators, nurses, and laundry workers—you would not believe how much laundry we do!” says Joe Miele, a founder and daily volunteer of the organization along with Susan Alderman and Rebecca Stanger.

localbusiness1-1BPSW is a community-based animal welfare organization that focuses on Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR), a lifesaving program that saves lives by humanely reducing the population of unowned, free-roaming cats. Since 2014, BPSW has spayed and neutered over 600 animals in Las Cruces and the surrounding county. By spaying/neutering outdoor cats, the group lessens the number of unwanted litters. Most importantly, TNR saves lives and prevents suffering of the animals involved. The program also addresses everything from proper feeding to returning cats to their colonies, and everything in between.

Get Involved: TNR is an expensive endeavor relying on public support to fund the number of surgeries they do on a regular basis. Donations are tax-deductible and can be mailed to BPSW, PO Box 13263, Las Cruces, NM 88013. If you shop online they are a member charity for GoodSearch, Goodshop, and AmazonSmile. PayPal can be sent to BrokenPromisesSW@comcast.net. PetSmart and Horse & Hound gift cards are appreciated too.
