March Events from the Doña Ana Arts Council

The Doña Ana Arts Council’s March schedule begins with one of their biggest events of the year: the Las Cruces Arts Fair, March 1 – 3 at the Las Cruces Convention Center. The month also includes popular Get Artrageous! art classes, a new multi-day art workshop with Carolyn Bunch, the final segments of the current Feed Your Mind art and cultural seminars, and much more. The Doña Ana Arts Council office and Arts & Cultural Center are located at 1740 Calle de Mercado in Mesilla. All programs except the Las Cruces Arts Fair are held at the Arts & Cultural Center. March 1 – 3, Las Cruces Arts Fair: The Ninth Annual Las Cruces Arts Fair will take place March 1 through 3 at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Avenue. This event offers a venue filled with high-quality art of all media, including paintings, photography, woodwork, jewelry, sculpture, fiber arts, and much more. The fair opens Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to exploring the art of over 90 artists, attendees can enjoy the music of flamenco guitarist Jake Mossman Friday evening and Saturday, watch the Quick Art Competition from 11 to noon on Saturday, and purchase food and beverages. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at www.daarts.org. $10 for one person, with children aged 12 and under admitted free.

March 4 & March 11, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Feed Your Mind Arts & Cultural Seminar: These will be the final two presentations of the Impressionism Beyond France series presented by UTEP instructor Kathleen Key. Drop ins are welcome for $20 (DAAC members $16 or 20% off).  

Ms. Key will resume the Monday evening Feed Your Mind Arts & Cultural Seminars on April 29 through June 24 with a 9 week course on Late 19th Century and 20th Century Art.  Register on line at daarts.org.

March 6, Get ArtRageous! art class: Gail Lieurance will teach a two-hour make-and-take class on modern brush lettering from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All materials and light refreshments are included for the $35 fee or $28 for DAAC members (20% off). Dress appropriately for working with art supplies, some of which can be messy.

March 7 & March 14, 1:30 – 3 p.m., Feed Your Mind Arts & Cultural Seminar: These are is the final two presentations in the Women in Art series presented by UTEP instructor Kathleen Key. Drop ins are welcome for $20 or $16 for DAAC members (20% off).

Ms. Key will resume the Thursday afternoon Feed Your Mind Arts & Cultural Seminars on May 2 through June 27 with a 9 week course on the History of Fashion and Fashion Design.  Register on line at daarts.org.

March 9, 4 – 7 p.m., Second Saturday 10–10 Arts Hop: The Arts & Cultural Center will exhibit “Figures & Flowers: New Work by Jan Minow” from March 1 through 29, with a special opening reception during the monthly Second Saturday 10-10 Arts Hop on March 9 from 4 – 7 p.m.  Free and open to the public.

March 13, Get ArtRageous! art class: Sally Quillin presents a make-and-take class on creating a pen and ink with watercolor painting. Two class options are available: 2 – 4 p.m. or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. All materials and light refreshments are provided for the $35 registration fee or $28 for DAAC members (20% off). Dress appropriately for working with art supplies, some of which can be messy.

March 20, Get ArtRageous! art class: Tiffany Figueroa will teach a two-hour make-and-take class on using alcohol inks to create unique art pieces from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All materials and light refreshments are included for the $35 fee or $28 for DAAC members (20% off). Dress appropriately for working with art supplies, some of which can be messy.

March 22 – 23, Multi-day art workshop: Portraits in Charcoal or Pastels with Carolyn Bunch. Continuing the new series of intensive art workshops, Carolyn Bunch will spend two full days with students to learn her techniques for creating portraits. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day with a lunch break. The workshop is $200 or $160 for DAAC members (20% off). Materials list will be provided upon registration.

March 27, Get ArtRageous! art class:  Sally Quillin’s two hour class “After DeGrazia” is rescheduled from an earlier date to March 27 at either 2 – 4 p.m. or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  This will be a watercolor class where you create your own art in the style of popular Southwest artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia.  All materials and light refreshments are included for the $35 fee or $28 for DAAC members (20% off). Dress appropriately for working with art supplies, some of which can be messy.

March 29, 12 – 1 p.m., Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley: This free discussion for those interested in supporting the arts will be on the second presentation on the topic of creating a Mesilla Valley/Doña Ana County arts directory.
