The four radio stations owned by Adams Radio Group (ARG) have about 80,000 weekly listeners in and around Las Cruces, and they have brought at least two relative newcomers to town from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mike Jensen came to Las Cruces to join ARG as general sales manager in June 2016 and became the stations’ general manager last December. His wife, Lisa, followed him to Las Cruces last April. But the adjustment from life in a very big city to a smaller one hasn’t been as tough you might think. Both Mike and Lisa are from small cities in the Midwest. Mike is a native of Columbus, Nebraska and Lisa hails from Rapid City, South Dakota. As business development director for VizExplorer, Lisa continues to travel throughout the region about 50 percent of the time helping casinos with data analytics.

Both Mike and Lisa love Las Cruces and the surrounding area—biking, hiking and exploring in the Organ Mountains, Ruidoso, Truth or Consequences and even Santa Fe. They’re looking forward to visiting Carlsbad Caverns and the many attractions in and around Silver City, along with many other parts of the Land of Enchantment. The Jensens also love Las Cruces’ downtown Farmers and Crafts Market and the local music scene.

“There’s so much character” in Las Cruces, Lisa says.

At his desk—his office is the first left when you walk in the front door at ARG—Mike is showcases a pretty terrific music scene as well, along with news (you can even submit a news tip or public service announcement online), weather, sports and traffic, well-known and highly respected on-air personalities, a solution-based sales department, live remotes, request lines, and lots of listener call-in contests.

Top-rated KGRT radio has a 31-year heritage as the longest-running country-format station in Las Cruces, Mike says. “We’re pretty proud of that.”

Jackie and Joey (“The Big Show”) have been on the air for about six years now at Hot 103. Classic Rock 98.7 is the only rock-music station around, Mike notes, and Kool Oldies 104.5 FM/AM 570 debuted last year. “We’re very proud of our products,” he says. “We’re live and local. We cover every demographic.”

The total staff of 15 part- and full-timers (plus two interns) includes a top-notch sales team who put together ideas for advertisers that “really engage the listeners,” Mike says. And ARG Operations Manager Ernesto Garcia is the longest consecutive running on air personality in town. “We’re a team here,” Mike says. “Everybody works together for the success of our listeners and our advertisers.”

Mike has also overseen the completion of the station’s remodeling—they got a new roof a few weeks ago and just expanded the air conditioning system so KOOL (and KGRT, Classic Rock and even Hot 103) are cooler than ever.

Mike and Lisa don’t have any kids, but they love to spoil their nieces and nephews when they visit, and they’re thinking about getting a puppy.

We’re a team here. Everybody works together for the success of our listeners and our advertisers.
