The entire month of February is For the Love of Art Month
For almost two decades, art aficionados in the Mesilla Valley have celebrated February as For the Love of Art Month (FLAM for short), an event founded and organized by ArtForms Artist Association of New Mexico. It began with a conversation around a table about how to support Las Cruces artists. Current ArtForms President Marty Galster says, “The ultimate goal of FLAM is to promote the arts in Las Cruces and also to promote the individual artists.”
With that goal in mind, ArtForms leaders put together some ideas, organized events, and established a tradition that continues today. In fact, 2017 is the 20th anniversary of the creation of Artforms and a special event honoring the founders is being planned.
“For the Love of Art Month is a Las Cruces tradition,” says artist Mary Zawacki. “Every February, people look forward to seeing artwork from our area’s vibrant art community.”
While much of the focus of FLAM is on visual art, including drawings, paintings, sculpture, fiber arts, gourd art, photography, fractal art, woodworking, metal, glass, and jewelry, ArtForms strives to incorporate all forms of art, including performances such as plays, concerts, dance, and literary arts.
One of the main goals is to bring artists and potential art buyers together in a gallery, studio, or home. They can discuss the art, the vision for the piece, and the techniques used to create it. Art buyers and artists can make a connection and, if a piece is purchased and displayed in the home, the new owner knows more about the art and the artist than if it were simply plucked from a gallery wall.
From studio tours and unique gallery exhibits to poetry readings and live performances, there’s something for every interest.
