Did you know that New Mexico is the second largest producer of pecans nationwide?
Here in our Zia state, 67 million pounds of in-shell pecans are produced annually. This is all thanks to settlers dating back to the 1800s, who brought these delicious nuts to the Mesilla Valley. This year, we want to celebrate our state’s most popular nut with the 1st Annual New Mexico Pecan Festival! Our mission is to bring people from all over the region to Old Mesilla to enjoy the beauty and rich history of the Mesilla Valley.
We will be getting our PECAN on at this free festival that is open for ALL ages. Starting October 7th at the Pecan Grill launch party, and then transitioning to historic Mesilla on the 8th and 9th. What you can expect: a family-friendly 5K ‘Run like a Nut’ fun run; a preview of new area trends during the festival fashion show; shopping the products of unique vendors; bounding to the finish line in the pecan sack races; competing in the pecan pie eating contest, and voting on the best pecan-infused drink. But just wait, there’s more. Carnival rides, bounce houses, and a petting zoo will keep families busy all day! We will even have wine and beer tastings from local wineries and breweries. Cornhole and horseshoe competitions complete with prizes for the best teams will be hosted along Avenida de Mesilla, and best of all, free musical performances on the Plaza both Saturday and Sunday.
