Tips from the Experts

Monica Pass and James Cross from Guzman’s Greenhouse offer up these insider tips for bringing your plants indoors when that cold front hits. For more tips visit

  • Opt for ceramic pots.

“They are porous so when there’s too much water it will be absorbed into the pores and when there’s not enough water it will be reabsorbed back into the soil,” Monica explains.

  • Put them in the brightest light possible when bringing in from outside.

Placing near a vent or away from a window can shock and even kill the plant,  if it’s a plant that thrives in full sun. “One indication that your plant is not getting enough light is when the leaves start to get spaced apart further. You’ll see long spindles with long spaces between the leaves because they are stretching toward the sunlight,” James says.

  • Beware the common mistake of overwatering.

Plants most often dry out faster in the outdoors, so they’ll need less water inside. “People usually pay too much attention to their houseplants,” James notes. “They like to be left alone for the most part. They’ll start to get a little top heavy and the soil will shrink and pull away from the edge of the pot when it needs to be watered.”

  • Worried you may be overwatering?

Gently take the plant out of the pot and inspect the roots. If they’re white and curly, they’re probably getting the right amount. If they are black and smell funny, pull back on your watering.

  • While you’re looking, make sure there aren’t too many visible roots. “You want to see some, but not too many,” Monica advises. “Root-bound is a great way to get your plant mad at you. They will dry out much faster and be more susceptible to insects.”

  • Always bring in your succulents before a freeze. While they thrive outside in the summer, a freeze will almost surely kill them off.

Before you bring your plants inside, sprinkle on some systematic insecticide as a preventative. It will prevent pests and microbes from breeding and keep you from swatting at gnats in the house.
