Top 10 Wedding Trends

Wedding TrendsFrom florists and event planners to photographers and bakers, we searched high and low for the best wedding advice of the season. Here are the 10 phrases and trends we heard over and over.

Modern family

Between blended families, adopted families, step parents, and same-sex marriages, there are no hard and fast ceremony rules any more. Want both your dads to walk you down the aisle? Go for it. Is your true “best man” a female? There’s even a term for that. “Honorary attendants are more and more common on both sides of wedding parties. It’s not necessarily gender specific anymore,” Roxanne says.

A wedding is about two people uniting their lives, so it makes sense to incorporate those touches that have personal meaning into your big day. Frame that goofy photo of you two for your reception table, work an inside joke into your vows, serve a signature cocktail that mixes each of your favorite flavors, or walk down the aisle to your song instead of the traditional wedding march. It’s your day so make it so.

Small Bites

From food trucks and taco bars to midnight snacks, couples are thinking outside the standard menu when choosing dining fare. Hiring a food truck is a fun twist for outdoor receptions or rehearsal dinners, and Roxanne says serving a midnight snack, like sliders, after an evening of champagne and dancing is also popular.

Metallic hues are huge in 2016! Say yes to silver and gold, but also don’t overlook bronze, copper, and rose gold.

Cell phone photos. Wedding websites. Excel spreadsheets. Google Earth maps. The tools we use to plan weddings are a whole lot different than they used to be. Enchanted Occasions creates customized digital layouts to scale the entire wedding site to size right down to the dessert table. “The bride usually comes in with a vision and this way we know for sure that we’re all seeing the same thing,” Devorah explains.

Green and Local

Buying with a local and environmentally friendly mindset has spilled over into the realm of weddings. From using local flowers to reducing waste by using glassware and sustainable products, couples are finding that going green is simpler, less expensive, and ultimately more rewarding.

Rustic Chic and Glitzy Glam

When it came to wedding trends, two themes came out far and away on top this year.

Rustic, nature-inspired weddings are still really popular, particularly in the beautiful Mesilla Valley. Look for soft colors, cascading flowers, and textures like wood and burlap.

Ultra glam is the newest trend to grab hold of the wedding world. Think glitz, shine, sparkle, and over-the-top elegance. The metallic shades fit perfectly into this theme.

If you’re planning a wedding in 2016 and you don’t already have a Pinterest board going, you’re way behind the times. Absolutely everyone we talked to said whether you’re looking at rings, cakes, food, dresses, or décor, showing up to a meeting with an inspiration board gets the planning off on the right foot. It’s the easiest—and most fun!—means of determining your personal wedding style.

Wedding Trends

Whether it’s building their own centerpieces or making their own wedding favors, today’s brides are pretty hands on. “With so many ideas right at our fingertips on the Internet, this is the age of the DIY bride,” Roxanne notes. “As an event planner, I’m sometimes hired just for the day of the wedding. They want to do all the decorating and planning but want someone there to handle behind the scenes details.”
