A Moving Picture
Three students from Las Cruces’ new medical school, the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, were recently cast as extras in a major Hollywood film that is currently filming in New Mexico. The movie, Horse Soldiers, stars Chris Hemsworth and is based on the 2010 book of the same name. It recounts the true story of U.S. Special Forces operatives fighting the Taliban in post 9/11 Afghanistan. The students managed to take two weekends away from their rigorous schedule to film in the central part of the state.
Originally just hoping to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see what really goes on behind the scenes of a major Hollywood production, the students say they ultimately gained insight into their futures as physicians and got a firsthand introduction to the healthcare issues New Mexico is facing. “We ended up learning some really profound messages. Themes of faith, medicine, trust, and cultural understanding emerged throughout the experience,” says Harris Ahmed.
