Story by Elena Valdez
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and whether you are an early bird planner or a last-minute shopper, the Flowerama shop on 1300 S El Paeso has you covered. Valentine’s Day, as for all flower shops, is the busiest days of the year to sell flowers. But what if you want to do something different? What if instead of a dozen roses and box of chocolates, you want to change it up a bit? Now you can . . .
Owners David and Donna Watson of the Flowerama shop have begun selling Fruit Bouquets! At the end of April last year, the Watsons embarked on a new opportunity to start making and selling the bouquets of fruit in addition to their popular flower arrangements. The Watsons even added a room within their shop especially for the preparation of the beautiful fruit creations. Donna Watson, who makes the bouquets, became food certified and took a course on safe food handling.
The bouquets are made of many types of fruits such as pineapple, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries, red grapes, apple slices, and orange slices. When searching for fruit the Watsons like to source from our Valley and hand pick the fruits themselves. Other times, or when fruit is hard to come by, they will purchase the fruit from area stores.
Also, for the sweets lovers on your list, some bouquets feature chocolate-covered strawberries, apples, or any kind of fruit you’d like dipped in chocolate. The fruit bouquets are arranged using a base of kale and except for the skewers and container, the bouquets are completely edible. Once finished, the fruit bouquets are big, beautiful, and delicious! (And whatever fruit is left over after the bouquets are created goes to the Watsons daughter’s cow. Nothing is wasted, and the cow gets some delicious eats!)
Since the addition of fruit bouquets, the business has been growing steadily and becoming more and more popular among Las Crucens. This is the only location in town that sells the Fruit Bouquets. Flowerama will also deliver their Fruit Bouquets within city limits for a $12 delivery charge. The Fruit Bouquets range from $34.99 up to about $120 and you can even customize your order in case of a specific fruit allergy or to fit the recipient’s taste buds.
This will be the Watsons first time selling Fruit Bouquets for Valentine’s Day, and they expect them to be a popular selection. Once the order has been taken, the Fruit Bouquet can typically be prepared in about 2 to 3 hours; however, it is best to place your order at least a day in advance, especially with the coming bouquet-busy holiday.
