The 2nd Annual GingerBread House Contest

November 19, 2016 raguirre

Traveling from Missouri, Rob and his wife of 32 years, Tammy, found themselves drawn to plant a church in Las Cruces. Looking to familiarize himself with the community, Rob came up with a fun way for his new neighbors to express their creativity. Last year he inaugurated the first annual Gingerbread House Contest which saw a number of truly unique entries, along with a great show of support and enthusiasm.

This year, Rob anticipates the contest to be even bigger and better. The contest includes both children and adult divisions open for team and individual entries. For the kids, the gingerbread kits on the shelves in Walmart, Target, or other stores around town will do just fine. Kits like these will also be provided to elementary schools throughout the city, so keep an ear out for any new class projects your child may be talking about soon.

For the adults, the gingerbread must be homemade. (Sorry, grown-ups, there are no “easy-outs” in this contest.) Not to worry though, the Gingerbread Man himself has a few words of advice to ensure a fresh and delicious house. “Tip number one is, try not to burn your gingerbread by having it as even as possible when you bake it,” Rob advises. “And remember not to use egg or butter icing because the house will ‘go bad’ before long.”

Each division will be awarded prizes, with first place winners receiving $100, second place $75, and the third place winners receiving $50. Division winners and runner-ups will be displayed at the Mesilla Valley Mall during the first three weekends of December, leading up to Christmas.
This fun event is for children and adults alike who want to embrace their inner artist and possibly even discover an unknown passion. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and take pride in one another. To help foster this mentality, the theme for this year’s event is completely open, meaning entries can boast anything from a Star Wars or Avengers related theme to a traditional Winter Wonderland design, so get entered, and really let those creative juices flow.
