Some people love it. Most hate it.

But giving your home a good annual scrubbing can make weekly cleaning easier in the long run. Jared and Maylene Bellon, owners of Merry Maids in Las Cruces and Ruidoso, know the importance of spring cleaning—and how overwhelming it can seem. In fact, Jared says, 68 percent of homeowners consider spring cleaning an overwhelming chore. “The most common cleaning challenge homeowners face is figuring out where to start,” he notes.

What are some must do items everyone should have on their spring cleaning list?

At Merry Maids, we have a “Spring Cleaning Boot Camp” that provides homeowners with a pre-planned cleaning routine to get homes clean one room at a time. If you have a set cleaning plan, you know where to start and where to end, so you can make sure you have all the tools to do the job well and efficiently.

Breaking it up room-by-room makes tasks more manageable and may even help you clean areas you often ignore. Follow this handy checklist to make sure you don’t overlook any must-do chores:

Spring Cleaning Checklist

  • Flip mattresses
  • Wash bedspreads, mattress covers, and duvets
  • Sort through closets and donate unused items to others in need
  • Thoroughly dust all knick-knacks
  • Launder or dry clean curtains
  • Clean out refrigerator and scrub shelves
  • Steam clean or scrub bathroom floors to restore true color

What do many homeowners overlook when cleaning?

Baseboards, door trims, under the bed, and in front of cabinets sometimes go months without being cleaned. Don’t forget other overlooked spots like doors, door handles, TV remotes, window sills, blinds, shutters, and trash cans.

What about homes with pets?

When pets are in the home, a lot of things require more attention. Spring cleaning is a perfect time to wash pet beds, clean pet hair from under couch cushions and from under couches and chairs, as well as under beds where pets like to hide and play.

What special considerations should be taken when you have children?

It’s important to use environmentally friendly products when there are children (and pets) in the home. You don’t want to use chemicals if you don’t have too. Green cleaning is so common now. It is easy to find green products and keep chemicals out of the home. At Merry Maids, we use Design for the Environment (DfE) cleaning products because they are safe for the environment and chemical free. Homeowners can use these items in their home, as well as natural cleaners from the kitchen. Vinegar and baking soda is a great combination to use when cleaning. There is a common misconception out there that natural cleaning products don’t work as well as chemicals, but that is not true. Most natural cleaning products can work just as well as chemicals, especially when you pair them correctly.

Also, bring children into the cleaning process. By giving children age-appropriate cleaning responsibilities, they can learn about the cleaning process which will benefit them as they grow into adulthood.

Any other time-saving cleaning tips?

Keep a tote handy that has all your cleaning supplies together. Having an easy to grab tote with commonly used cleaning products, like a microfiber cloth and all-purpose cleaner, doesn’t just make spring cleaning easier because you can carry it from room to room, it also makes it easier to clean up a mess when it happen, instead of leaving it for another time.

What if the thought of spring cleaning is just too much to consider?

It is an understandable feeling, and Merry Maids is here to help in those situations. Many people are busy and when they do have down time, they want to spend it with the ones they love or doing something they enjoy. We are a licensed, bonded, and insured company and all our trained cleaning professionals go through background checks and drug testing so our clients know they can trust whoever is coming in to their home, and when our professional cleaners leave, they have a clean home done right and more time to do what they enjoy.
