This is me! Carley Rose Porter. I’m 17 and in high school. A few months ago, I moved from upstate New York to the lovely city of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Needless to say it was a big move and I’m still adjusting to the huge lifestyle change. Because of this, I’ve gotten the chance to explore the city and see what exactly it has to offer from a new perspective. Read on for my favorite spots, upcoming trends, and my New Mexico must-haves.

The Farmers’ and Crafts Market of Las Cruces

my favorite place | farmer and craft market(farmersandcraftsmarketoflascruces.com) is very lively and popular, with it being located on Downtown Main Street. There are over 300 vendors and an overwhelming amount of one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, and other accessories. They have a little bit of something for everyone. If you decide you want to check it out for yourself, the market goes on every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:30am to 1pm. I always like to get their early. That way, you have time to walk around without it being too overcrowded. It’s absolutely possible to get ahold of the well talked about trends, without dropping a massive amount of money.

Sledding in the Desert?

One fun way to spend the day is visiting White Sands National Monument (nps.gov/whsa). Grab your friends and make a memorable road trip out of it! While you’re there, stop in at the visitor’s center and pick up some sleds to go sledding down the white gypsum dunes. You can also have a picnic at one of the many picnic tables and grills located within the monument.

Fashion Finds

My favorite place | handmade with beads farmer market braceletAs far as fashion goes, my friends and I have been loving the very popular vintage vibe. I can’t tell you how many amazing pieces I’ve been able to find in local flea markets, thrift shops, and vintage stores. One of the best places I’ve come to find is the Turnabout Shop (812 Spruce). The store has more of a boutique feel and they carry things from vintage clothing to unique home décor.

Quick Treats

Over here in the Land of Enchantment, there’s an abundance of hidden gems sprawled about in the city of Las Cruces. If you’re looking to grab a quick bite, head on over to Corner Bakery Café (2305 E. Lohman); it’s quickly become one of my go-to places. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and seriously have an endless amount of options to choose from. (Even for you vegetarians and vegans!)
Another place I’ve been loving is Keva Juice (1001 E. University). It’s a great place to get freshly pressed juices, smoothies, and frozen yogurt. It’s definitely a very health option too! I usually get their Strawberry Banana Acai Bowl.

Outdoor Adventure

My favorite place | Picacho PeakIf you’re someone who falls on the more active side of the spectrum, consider hiking the Picacho Peak Trail. It’s perfect for beginners and offers up some spectacular photo ops. If you’re lucky enough to get there at just the right time, you’ll see a really spectacular sunrise or sunset.

How to Get There

  • From Picacho Hills Dr., continue on to Barcelona Ridge Rd.
  • Follow for one mile, then turn north on Anthem Rd.
  • Continue for one mile until road ends. Turn north on the unpaved Loop Rd.
  • Follow for 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking lot.
