Losing Weight During the Holidays

With the holidays in full effect, a little bit of winter weight gain is an inevitability, and with the New Year right around the corner — and the resolutions that come along with it — many Las Crucens will soon be looking for ways to get fit.

For those looking for something more than the traditional weights and treadmills, options abound.

Surprising as it may be, the City of Las Cruces Parks & Recreation Department offers a dynamic range of fitness classes, organized sports and beyond for enthusiasts young and old, held at the City’s four recreation centers — Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center, the Munson Senior Center and the Meerscheidt and O’Brien Papen recreation centers.

Fitness programs offered by the Parks & Recreation Department include aqua fitness classes at the Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center; Tai Chi classes great for improving body mechanics with a low-impact workout; Hatha Yoga and PiYo (a combination of pilates and yoga) to improve and increase range of motion while calming the mind; high-energy Zumba classes that will have adults and seniors sweating to the beat of propulsive international rhythms; and a variety of sports and fitness programs designed especially with seniors 50 and older in mind.

The city also offers youth basketball, indoor and outdoor soccer, volleyball, football, baseball, gymnastics and tumbling programs, for kids as young as 4 years old.

The City of Las Cruces’ fitness programs are inexpensive as they are diverse, at just $2 per class or $1 for seniors 60 and older. The city also offers a Fitness Punch Card, which gives the holder 30 visits to city fitness facilities for just $48.

For the Las Cruces fitness enthusiast looking to get way outside of the gym, though, one need look no further than the expansive mountain and desert landscapes in every direction. Hiking abounds, either solo, with friends or led by a guide in a group setting.

The Southwest Environmental Center, which works to protect the wildlife and wild places we so enjoy in southern New Mexico, leads its popular Back by Noon outings on most Saturday mornings.
