Bud Ruso, thanks for the wonderful story about my father, Bud Laabs . As you know the old pool was Laabs pool and the new one is named for him and coach Rudy Camunez. How come? About 65 years ago right after WWII Las Cruces was growing, and Bud Laabs, with help of people like coach Camunez started the first organized recreation activities in the city/county area:softball leagues for adults, Little league baseball for the youngsters and baseball for grownups at Old Lyons field, plus free swimmig for all at the old Laabs pool three times a week, and building Apodoca Park were the things I remember they initiated. He also refereed high school and college football and basketball all over the southwest until he was in his fifties. As you reported, he passed away at only 58 in 1964 one week before I graduated from the Naval Academy. Capt. Steve Laabs USN, Ret.
