THE PIATIGORSKY FOUNDATION’S SOLO PIANIST MOLLY MORKOSKI
TO STUDENTS AT THE ONATE HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Classical pianist, Molly Morkoski, delighted hundreds of 6th – 12th grade Las Cruces Public School students on January 22nd at Onate High School with music that told a story. She started with Francis Poulenc’s The Story of Babar based on Jean de Brunhoff’s classic story of Babar, the baby elephant whose mother is killed by a hunter and Babar’s subsequent adventures in the city. Poulenc’s score is for narrators and piano and Ms. Morkoski enlisted the able help of Onate drama students to serve as narrators for the piece. She ended the concert with a Nocturne by Frederic Chopin, a piece that told a story without words. After each piece she interacted with the students answering questions and posing questions of her own.

This Piatigorsky Foundation public outreach event was brought to Las Cruces by the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) and the Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) working as Kennedy Center Partners in Education. It was presented with the generous support of the El Paso Community Foundation and the Devasthali Family Foundation.

We are delighted to be working with the Piatigorsky Foundation and the Las Cruces Public Schools to bring high-quality art experiences to school children.” said Kathleen Albers, DAAC Executive Director. “The new LCPS Coordinator for visual and performing arts, Cari Aguilera, is a tremendous help.”

The Piatigorsky Foundation was established by Evan Drachman in 1990 in honor of his grandfather Gregor Piatigorsky. Piatigorsky deeply believed in the healing and inspiration power of classical music. He once said, “Music makes life better. Music is a necessity. It is rich. It is imaginative. It is magnificent. And it is for everyone.” The Piatigorsky Foundation is committed to carrying on Piatigorsky’s mission by evoking cultural curiosity through educational and accessible live performances. For over 27 years, The Piatigorsky Foundation’s commitment to artistic excellence and public outreach has fascinated many avid concert goers, as well as curious first-timers. It is this combination of complimentary access, flamboyant performances, and human warmth that makes Piatigorsky Foundation concerts so appealing to diverse audiences. Last year, the Foundation presented two tours of 16 concerts in New Mexico reaching over 2,740 people in Lovington, Jal, Carrizozo, Las Cruces, and Hobbs. This season, The Foundation will again present two tours in the state. The first tour will took place in January 2018, beginning in Las Cruces and concluding in Eunice. The second tour is planned for April 2018.

Pianist MOLLY MORKOSKI made her Carnegie Hall solo debut in 2007, and has been presented at halls and festivals around the world. Her recent schedule included an invitation by John Adams and The San Francisco Symphony to participate in his 70th Birthday celebration and she will be a featured artist in the 80th Birthday concert for composer John Corigliano. An avid chamber musician, Molly Morkoski collaborates with many of today’s leading musicians, and has performed with the Chiara, Lark and Momenta string quartets. Molly Morkoski makes her home in New York City.
