LAS CRUCES ARTS FAIR Artist Profile: Karen Feder, Jeweler

February 16, 2018 Julian Nunez

While many people shop for art to decorate their homes or yards at the Doña Ana Arts Council’s Las Cruces Arts Fair, some come for art to display on themselves. One of the jewelry artists that will exhibit their creations March 16 to 18 at the Las Cruces Convention Center is Karen Feder, who has been a jewelry designer since the 1970s.

Feder moved to Las Cruces in 2011. Jewelry design has always been her love, even when she was a teacher, figure skater, interior designer, or theatre set designer. As a high school art teacher in Michigan specializing in three-dimensional art, Feder’s spare time was spent creating jewelry. She loves working with natural objects, saying, “There are so many new rocks, shells, fossils, and more that are being discovered all over the world, and cut, polished, and drilled to have a new life as a bead. Buying new beads has become an addiction!”

The beads drive the design of her jewelry, depending on their size, shape, and color. She creates unique neckpieces with matching earrings, explaining, “I am completely inspired by the beads.” Her booth at the Las Cruces Arts Fair will be touch-and-try friendly, with the pieces laid out on table-top displays. She also enjoys explaining to visitors about the beads. Feder says, “When a customer asks about the beads in a piece, I always give the names of the stones, where they are from, how rare they may have become, often the metaphysical advantage of the stone, and even why I chose to create a particular piece.”

The Doña Ana Arts Council’s Las Cruces Arts Fair, the area’s most expansive collection of art and fine crafts, will feature 90 artists from across the country, who will offer work in numerous categories. Admission for the Arts Fair is $10 for one adult or 2 adults for $15 if purchased in advance before March 16. Each ticket is good for 2 days: Friday evening (5 – 8 pm), Saturday (10 am – 5 pm), or Sunday (10 am – 4 pm). Children aged 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets available at www.daarts.org , the DAAC office at 1740 Calle de Mercado, Cutter Gallery, Art Obscura, Frame & Art Center, or call (575) 523-6403.
