DOÑA ANA ARTS COUNCIL ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER GALLERY FEATURED ARTIST FOR APRIL 2018: ARLENE TUGEL

March 12, 2018 Julian Nunez

Striking paintings by artist Arlene J. Tugel feature unique color interpretations in watercolor. The opening reception for the exhibit of plein air paintings, “Enchanted Colorscapes” is Saturday night, March 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dona Ana Arts Council Arts and Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado, Suite D, Mesilla.

The Las Crucen does most of her painting en plein air (outdoors). Tugel states “I look for surprising colors in the landscape and then design my palette around them. I call that process “enchanting the color.” The color harmony of each painting reflects the artist’s mood and connection to the environment.

An avid hiker, Tugel says “exploring the vast landscape of the Southwest inspires me to paint”. Her favorite times of day are morning and late afternoon when sunlight and shadows play across plants, rocks and hillsides. Tugel’s spontaneity with watercolor can be seen in her choice of colors and pattern of brushstrokes. Tugel says “I want the viewer to experience magic in the beauty of the land and value its importance to our well-being.” She paints familiar and hidden landscapes in Dona Ana County and New Mexico. Look for her at nearby parks, you may find her at her easel!

A twenty-year resident of Las Cruces, Tugel has lived in California, Oregon and Washington. In 2010, after a 36-year career in soil science, she rekindled a childhood desire to pursue art. Tugel studied painting and drawing with numerous artists; her preferred mediums are watercolor and watercolor collage.

Tugel was awarded Signature Member status with the New Mexico Watercolor Society in 2015. Her work has been accepted in juried shows in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Socorro, Deming and Pinos Altos, earning awards in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. She is an active member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society, Southern Chapter and displays her work year-round at the Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery, Mesilla, NM

The show runs March 31 through April 28. Regular hours at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Info: 575-523-6403, email admin@daarts.org or www.daarts.org
